Preparation

Before the summer school begins, you should make some preparations.

Most importantly, you need a laptop with at least 8 GB RAM (more is better). If this is a problem for you, please get in touch with us as soon as possible and we will find a solution.

Beyond that here are a bunch of things we strongly recommend you do before travelling.

Join the Oscar slack (a multi user chat system)
- familiarize yourself with it,
- and there join the #summerschool channel
Register a GitHub account
Install git
Install Oscar via our install instruction
- if you already have it, please update to the latest version
If you do not have a favorite programming editor with Julia syntax highlighting:
- install Visual Studio Code
- install the “Julia” plugin
- Windows users should also install the WSL extension. This is explained here in more detail.
Install gh (a command line tool for controlling GitHub)
- and once it is installed, run gh auth login in a Unix Terminal and follow the instructions
Familiarize yourself with the very basics of Julia.
- We will not be teaching about Julia but we also won’t require deep knowledge.
- You should be able to write a simple function or a loop.

On Thursday, 11 September 2025, we will offer a “virtual office hour” starting at 10:00. There we will be available to help you with any problems you may have with the above preparations. Details will be made available shortly before.
